Honduras WashedCoffee Bean Intro:

Honduras Located in northern Central America, bordering the Caribbean Sea to the north, the Pacific Ocean’s Gulf of Fonseca to the south, and neighboring Nicaragua and El Salvador to the east and south, with Guatemala to the west. The country is mostly mountainous and plateau, with a tropical climate featuring mild temperatures and abundant rainfall—ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Front Street Coffee, after comparing several coffee beans from Central American countries, found that they all exhibit floral-fruity aromas and soft fruity tones. Some might ask, don’t each of these countries have their own unique flavor characteristics? Indeed, when introducing a country, Front Street Coffee always first highlights the typical flavor profile of its coffee to aid memorization. However, one thing to note: national borders are human-drawn lines, and coffee beans don’t instantly change flavor just by crossing them.

Front Street believes that good coffee roasting should reflect the regional flavors—for example, Yirgacheffe should taste like Yirgacheffe—and then build on that foundation to explore other possibilities. This is the sole criterion Front Street Coffee uses to determine coffee roasting profiles. Back to Honduran coffee , while its flavor profile may resemble that of neighboring countries, Honduran coffee stands out with hints of exotic spices in the aroma, followed by a rich nutty-chocolatey finish in the latter stages, delivering an overall balanced and layered cup.

Introduction to Honduran Coffee

Honduras is not only the largest coffee producer in Central America but also ranks as the world’s second-largest producer of washed Arabica beans when only considering this category. In the early 21st century, Honduran coffee surpassed bananas to become the country’s most important cash crop. Banana production is dominated by large American corporations, whereas coffee is grown by smallholder farmers—Honduras currently has 110,000 coffee farmers, with manual harvesting being the primary method. The picking season runs from November to March each year.

Honduras produces two very high-quality coffees, both highly praised by coffee enthusiasts. One is “highland coffee,” grown at elevations of 1000–1500m, and the other is “special highland coffee,” representing Honduras’s highest-grade beans and grown at altitudes of 1500–2000m. Most Honduran coffee is exported to the US and Germany.

Characteristics of Honduran Coffee

Average cultivation height exceeds 1,100m above sea level. The main coffee variety is Arabica, primarily including Caturra, Catuai, Pacas, and Typica, with washing being the dominant processing method. Honduran coffee boasts a remarkably diverse flavor profile, with the best examples exhibiting complex fruitiness and vibrant, juice-like acidity. It has high body and sweetness, often with fruity notes, though it can also carry nutty or toffee-like aromas, making it a quite multi-dimensional coffee.

Honduran Coffee Grading System

Strictly High Grown (SHG): over 1200m.

High Grown (HG): above 1000m.

Central Standard (CS): planted at elevations over 600m.

Caturra Variety

The Caturra variety is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety, discovered between 1915 and 1918 in a botanical garden in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Because the Caturra coffee tree is relatively short, it was named “Caturra,” derived from the Guarani word meaning “small.” Its compact size and shorter branches allow for denser planting.

The Caturra variety was promoted in Guatemala in the 1940s and later introduced to other Central American countries such as Costa Rica, Honduras, and Panama. Today, the Caturra coffee variety is widespread across Central and South America.

Region Intro:

The vast majority of coffee varieties grown in Honduras are Arabica, mainly Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Typica and Pacas-derived varieties. Honduran coffee beans are relatively large in size, uniform in size, and even and glossy in color. Caturra - native to Brazil, is a mutation of Bourbon. Catuai - originating from Brazil. It is a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra. The fruit shape is quite similar to Bourbon, but the yield per plant is higher, and the flavor also has a pleasant acidity.
