Panama Finca Sophia Estate Natural Geisha Coffee BeansCoffee Bean Intro:

Finca Sophia was established in 2008 and is located on the southwestern side of Panama’s Volcán Barú, covering an area of approximately 19 hectares. Compared to other well-known Panamanian estates, Finca Sophia is very small in scale—more like an experimental farm—incapable of large-scale production and instead specializing in producing only very high-quality coffee in limited quantities.

The estate was originally abandoned land due to over-farming. After years of disuse, the area was overgrown with wild grass, and the soil condition was far from ideal. Before deciding to plant coffee trees, the owner took soil samples and consulted other Panamanian coffee growers. At the time, many growers said that while coffee could potentially be grown in such soil, it would likely be very difficult. Despite the discouraging feedback, the owner ultimately purchased the land.

Perhaps it was “a self-fulfilling prophecy”—from 2009 to 2011, during the first planting of coffee, all the coffee trees were lost due to mold infestation. However, the owner did not give up and adjusted the coffee tree cultivation techniques between 2011 and 2012, restarting the planting process and allowing the coffee trees to adapt to the high-altitude environment on their own.

Hard work paid off. With the careful nurturing of the owner, Finca Sophia’s coffee beans began to yield abundantly in 2016. In 2017, the estate participated in the Best of Panama (BOP) competition for the first time and directly won the championship in the Geisha (Geisha variety) washed group. Years later, in 2020, Finca Sophia competed again, achieving outstanding results by winning the washed group championship and the natural group runner-up. The beans this time from Front Street Coffee are the 2022 harvest natural-process Geisha coffee beans from Finca Sophia.

As one of the highest-altitude estates in Panama, Finca Sophia’s significant diurnal temperature variation causes the coffee grown here to develop very slowly, resulting in coffee beans that exhibit surprisingly remarkable flavor profiles. In addition to the Geisha variety, the estate also grows the Catuai variety. However, due to the small size of the estate—with most of the area dedicated to Geisha—the Catuai beans from Finca Sophia are primarily supplied to the U.S. market. It is reported that the Catuai beans produced by the estate also have a rich and captivating flavor profile.

To preserve the captivating floral and fruity aromas of the Geisha beans, Front Street Coffee used a light roast. Through cupping comparisons, this natural-process coffee bean from Finca Sophia exhibits honeydew melon and rose dry fragrance when ground; upon inhalation, it presents orange, honeydew melon, apple juice, rose, and oolong tea notes—high sweetness with a long-lasting aftertaste.

Flavor Notes:The acidity is delicate and smooth, with sweetness emerging quickly on the tongue and lingering. The mouthfeel is clean and bright, like black tea. Aromas of rose, honeysuckle, sweet potato, grapefruit, lemon, black tea, and cane sugar unfold in clear layers, with a long finish.
