In [year], American banker Rudolph Peterson retired, moved to Panama, and purchased Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete, initially focusing on dairy farming. Later, his son Price quit his job as a doctor to help manage the farm and, in

La Esmeralda Estate

1964 year, introduced the Catuai and Caturra coffee varieties, 1987 year established a washed processing facility, thus owning its own coffee processing plant. 1994 year acquired the nearby Jaramillo Estate, known for its superior geography and excellent original coffee flavors, integrating it into Hacienda La Esmeralda. 1996 The Jaramillo Estate caught the attention of the Petersons due to its naturally grown coffee beans, which exhibited delightful citrus and floral-fruity aromas, distinct from typical Panamanian coffee flavors. After cupping beans from different sections of the farm, they discovered an unidentified coffee tree growing at the highest elevation of the estate. Due to its low yield, the previous owner had used it only as a windbreak. The Petersons unearthed its potential and decided to cultivate and nurture this section’s coffee trees separately.

Starting with its first entry in the [year] Panama Cup of Excellence, where it won the championship and continued to amaze, experts later identified the beans as the Ethiopian Geisha variety. Subsequently, the Peterson family focused heavily on developing infrastructure to support exceptional batch separation and meticulous processing.

2004 Hacienda La Esmeralda’s plot division BOP Hacienda La Esmeralda meticulously divides its Geisha-growing plots, primarily into three main sections: Jaramillo (

), Canas Verdes (

), and El Velo ( Jaramillo ). Each main plot is further subdivided into smaller micro-lots. Canas Verdes High-quality Geisha mainly comes from the Jaramillo ( El Velo ) and Canas Verdes (

) plots. Jaramillo Jaramillo ( Canas Verdes ) receives an annual rainfall of

, with an average daytime temperature of Jaramillo °C and an average nighttime temperature of 4000ml °C, at an average altitude of 19-25 . The Jaramillo plot is subdivided into 11-15 micro-lots: 1600-1700m (Mario), 5 (Ferris Wheel), Mario (Queen), Noria (Forest), Reina (Buenos Aires). Bosque Canas Verdes ( Buenos Aires ) receives an annual rainfall of

, with an average daytime temperature of Canas Verdes °C and an average nighttime temperature of 3500ml °C, at an average altitude of 16-23 . Canas Verdes includes a total of 10-15 micro-lots: 1600-1800m (Lino), 9 (Coronation), Lino (Founder), , Coronado (Leon), , Fundador (Peak), , León (Sugar), , Montaa (Quinta), , Trapiche (Cabin), , Chinta (Tumaco). , Cabaa El Velo ( , Tumaco ) is the newest plot acquired by Hacienda La Esmeralda, with an average altitude of

. Besides growing Geisha and Catuai, it also cultivates small amounts of other exotic varieties such as Laurina, Pacamara, Mocha, and El Velo . El Velo is divided into 1700-1900m micro-lots: SL28 (Pomen), 7 (Peach), Guabo,Portón (Fig Tree), Durazno (Fig), Higuerón (Buenavista), Higo (Eagle). Buena Vista Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Grades guila Through years of experimentation, Hacienda La Esmeralda found that only Geisha grown at altitudes above

meters can fully express its delicate flavors.

Therefore, the estate categorizes its Geisha coffee into three grades based primarily on planting altitude, supplemented by actual cupping results. 1400 Known colloquially as the "Red Label." Red Label Geisha batches are grown at altitudes of   meters, with cupping scores of

Esmeralda Special

Esmeralda Special points or higher, mainly from the Jaramillo ( 1600-1800 ) and Canas Verdes ( 90 ) regions. Red Label batches may be washed or naturally processed. Red Label batches are only available through global auctions. Jaramillo Known colloquially as Green Label, Green Label batches do not participate in auctions but remain of high quality. Green Label Geisha is grown at altitudes of Canas Verdes meters, primarily blending batches from different plots such as Jaramillo (

Canas Verdes Though not as high in grade as Red Label, Green Label still carries classic Geisha characteristics: floral, fruity, citrus acidity, and a rich, juicy body. Green Label Geisha is also available in washed or natural processing.

Known colloquially as Blue Label. Grown at altitudes of

meters, Blue Label blends Geisha beans from Jaramillo (

Geisha1500 ), Canas Verdes ( 1400-1500 ), and El Velo ( Jaramillo ). In previous years, Blue Label Geisha was only washed processed, but this year’s Blue Label introduces a natural processed option, including the one introduced by Front Street Coffee—the new harvest natural Blue Label Geisha. Canas Verdes Natural processed El Velo Hacienda La Esmeralda’s natural processing involves harvesting coffee cherries and directly sun-drying them in patios. As the cherries slowly dry, the beans inside remain intact, absorbing fruity and aromatic essences.

The cherries are evenly dried. Depending on weather and surface conditions, drying takes

to

days ( 3 hours per day) on concrete patios. 5 Once sufficiently dry, the cherries are rotated in a Guardiola ( 8 ) dryer for

hours to complete the drying process and prevent fermentation. After drying, machines remove the pulp and other layers. Guardiola The Guardiola is the preferred drying method when cherry size allows, as it can handle large volumes efficiently. A horizontal rotating drum, the Guardiola circulates warm air around the beans to remove moisture. 72 After drying, the beans are placed in nylon bags and stored in the warehouse for

to

days. This step, also called " 30 ," helps stabilize the beans and enhance cup flavor. 45 Roast Profile reposo For this new harvest natural Blue Label, we extend the drying phase to ensure even heat distribution between the bean surface and core. To highlight the bean’s acidity and floral-fruity notes, we opt for a light roast.
