Many friends open a drip bag in the office, pour hot water over it, and always find the flavor bland and unremarkable, or even just monotonous bitter roast or thin, watery notes. In fact, drip bag coffee is by no means a mere fallback pick-me-up; it is essentially a concentrated specialty pour-over. The reason we fail to brew a stunning cup is often that we overlook the origin terroir sealed inside the filter bag.

Whether a drip bag can show rich layers depends decisively on the growing environment of the beans themselves. Soil, altitude, sunlight and rainfall together weave the flavor code of coffee. As long as you choose freshly roasted, freshly ground and portion-packed specialty beans, and then get to know the terroir character of different continents, you can accurately recreate the fascinating aromas of each region in a small mug according to your own taste preferences.

First is the African region, a paradise of bright floral and fruity aromas. Thanks to high altitude and abundant sunshine, coffees here generally carry vivid fruit acidity and lifted floral notes. A medium-light roast seasonal drip bag such as Qianjie Yirgacheffe shows this terroir to the fullest; once brewed it is like a warm cup of citrus and jasmine black tea, with bright, soft acidity that drinks very fresh and pleasant.

If you are not usually comfortable with lively fruit acidity and long for a warm, gentle mouthfeel, the Central and South American region will be a reassuring choice. The climate and fertile soil here nurture a highly balanced nutty and cocoa character. A medium roast seasonal drip bag such as Qianjie Brazil is a typical representative, opening with the sweet aroma of roasted almond, macadamia and caramel, smooth and delicate on the palate and very easy to keep drinking.

Coffee lovers who crave a rich body and deep flavor should turn their eyes to the Asian region. Indonesian volcanic soil creates a unique herbal and spice character. A medium-dark roast seasonal drip bag such as Qianjie Indonesia Mandheling can present deep dark chocolate, herbal plant and roasted nut aromas, with a solid, full body and a long sweet finish, especially suitable for friends who like intense flavors.

If you are still in an exploratory phase and want to take in the charm of every continent at once, a variety pack is a good route. For example, putting together Qianjie Kenya Little Tomato with its bright berry acidity, Qianjie Panama Geisha with its elegant floral notes, and Qianjie Giddingding Cooperative with its abundant fruitiness spans from the lively juiciness of a light roast to the steady depth of a dark roast, letting you start a different flavor exploration at any time according to your mood.

The extraction principle of drip bags is derived from professional pour-over, and to fully awaken these terroir details the key lies in controlling the parameters well. In everyday pour-over practice, 15g of ground coffee is usually used, and 225ml of hot water is poured at a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio. Before pouring, first bloom thoroughly with 30ml of water for 30 seconds, then pour steadily in stages, keeping the total time at around 2 minutes, and the flavors will be fully released.

Brewing a drip bag can borrow the same logic. After the water boils, open the lid and let it sit for two or three minutes, and the water temperature will naturally drop to around 92°C. Choose a deeper cup to avoid the filter bag soaking in the coffee liquid for a long time. Pour in three stages: first fill to half so the coffee grounds are moistened and unfurl, pause for 20 seconds, then pour twice more in succession to nine-tenths full, and you can easily extract a clean, clearly layered flavor.

As long as you pinpoint the terroir characteristics of the three major regions and pair them with a careful pouring rhythm, drip bag coffee can glow with fascinating brilliance. Tear open a bag in a busy gap at work, watch the hot water slowly penetrate the coffee bed, and that natural aroma from distant mountains and sunlight disperses into the air, making a casually brewed cup of coffee a small, fragrant moment of happiness in everyday life.
