In recent years, there has been growing demand in the coffee market for new coffee varieties, and some competitors in major competitions have chosen to use these new varieties, propelling them to fame—such as the recently popular Sidra.
Notably, in the 2024 Multi-Origin Category, the champion with a score of 94.1 was Chiroso from Black Moon Farm. Chiroso has only emerged in the public eye over the past two years. In the 2023 BOP competition, Chiroso from the same farm, Black Moon Farm, achieved second place in the Variety Category with a score of 91.88.
Moreover, at the 2014 Colombia COE, Chiroso won first place, with third and eleventh places also going to this variety. It was later introduced to other farms in Colombia, and by the 2021 Colombia COE, many Chiroso varieties were again showcased, eventually making their way to Panama as well.
But later, some research institutions found that Chiroso has no genetic relationship with the Bourbon variety, which also indicates that it is not a variant of Caturra. However, these studies found that Chiroso is genetically related to Ethiopian landrace varieties, though it is still unclear how this Ethiopian landrace was introduced to Colombia.
In Urrao, Colombia, where coffee is grown at relatively high altitudes and lower temperatures, the Chiroso variety was initially planted for its cold resistance and high yield. Nowadays, it has gained attention and praise for its complex floral aromas and rich flavor profile.
