When extracting espresso, the golden liquid flowing out from beneath the filter basket gathers in the cup into a dense, thick layer of crema that is a delight to the eye. This layer of crema not only gives the coffee a rich, smooth mouthfeel, but is also the core carrier of aroma compounds. Faced with the abundant choice of coffee beans, if you want to extract a full-bodied crema, approaching it from the two distinctly different routes of blended beans and single-origin SOE lets you quickly find the flavor you like.

Blended beans have always been the core mainstay for producing rich crema. Roasters typically combine green beans from different origins with differing characteristics, offsetting each other's weaknesses to shape a balanced, steady flavor system. Such beans are often given a medium-dark roast, and the interior of the bean stores up ample carbon dioxide and lipids. During pressurized extraction the flow is stable and smooth, and the crema is long-lasting and thick, especially suited to enthusiasts who prefer a full-bodied mouthfeel.

Once you can read the recipe labeling of a blend, you can predict the flavor framework of the whole cup. In common recipes, lower-altitude South American beans such as Brazil are usually used as the base, supporting the main notes of nuts and cocoa along with a thick crema; this is then paired with high-altitude washed beans from Colombia or Central America to add soft caramel sweetness and a delicate mouthfeel. By understanding the combination patterns of each origin, you can roughly grasp the body and sweetness trajectory once it hits the palate.

As a representative of balanced flavor, Qianjie Specialty Blend uses a combination of beans from the Cerrado region of Brazil and the Huila region of Colombia. This bean extracts in a steady state, with a deep golden crema giving off aromas of roasted hazelnut, caramel and dark chocolate. Using a double basket filled with 18.5g of finely ground coffee, under 9 bar constant-pressure extraction, after low-pressure pre-infusion the flow is stable, with total time controlled at 27 seconds, yielding 37g of espresso, with a warm and easy-drinking mouthfeel.

If you are after a thick flavor and a deep crema like a rich sauce, a dark roast blend shows a marked advantage. These beans have undergone a fuller Maillard reaction and caramelization process, the acidity is effectively weakened, and notes of nuts, cocoa and caramelized sweetness are highlighted. Roasting fully opens up the micropores inside the bean, storing more gas molecules, so that during pressurized extraction a thick, rich dark crema quickly forms.

Qianjie Black Cocoa Blend brings this rich crema sensation across perfectly. Its flavor is concentrated on the expression of roasted nuts and intense dark chocolate, with a full sweetness and no fruity acidity interference. To make espresso, take 19g of coffee grounds and extract 38g of dark espresso under constant pressure within 26 seconds, the flow pouring out long and velvety. Stir it into 200ml of steamed warm whole milk, and the crema and milky aroma blend together, like drinking a cup of rich hot cocoa.

Unlike the harmonious complementarity emphasized by blended beans, single-origin SOE takes a pure route with a distinctive style. SOE refers to making espresso with single-origin beans from a single region. These beans are generally roasted on the lighter side, preserving to the greatest extent the detailed characteristics of their native terroir. Although the crema they extract is relatively thinner and pale apricot-yellow in color, the aroma is lively and uplifting, excelling at expressing citrus, tropical fruit and elegant floral notes.

When choosing a single-origin SOE, the characteristics of the origin and the green bean processing method are the core considerations. For example, African beans that have undergone anaerobic natural or special fermentation processing often yield espresso with an intense tropical fruit sweetness. This kind of espresso is very suitable for making iced Americano or creative specialty drinks; after dilution with ice water the aroma disperses further, and the bright, juice-like sweet acidity unfolds, presenting a light and lively taste experience.

Qianjie Strawberry Candy Coffee Beans are a representative style showcasing single-origin charm, with a sweetness like strawberry gummy candy. This bean is not only suitable for making a refreshing fruity iced Americano, but can also clearly reproduce its flavor using the pour-over method: weigh out 15g of coffee grounds, pour in 91°C hot water, brew at a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, first pour 30ml of water to bloom for 30 seconds, then pour steadily in two stages up to 225ml, with total time controlled at 2 minutes 05 seconds, for a clear, sweet fruit aroma.

Choosing the coffee beans you like essentially depends on your everyday drinking preferences. If you are used to starting the morning with a milk coffee, or prefer a rich, easy-drinking black coffee with nutty and caramel aromas, and value a long-lasting, thick crema, then blended beans are undoubtedly a worry-free and reliable route; if you are keen to explore floral and fruity aromas and sense the subtle variations of a origin's microclimate, single-origin SOE can bring abundant drinking pleasure. Only by choosing sensibly according to the scenario can you extract a satisfying coffee flavor.
