De'Longhi fully automatic machines have a very high adoption rate, but there is little measured data on compatible beans. This time, using a mid-range De'Longhi fully automatic machine (built-in grinder, one-touch espresso), we tested five beans over two weeks of daily output, and gave compatibility conclusions from three dimensions: crema, flavor and consistency.
Test method: machine parameters fixed (medium grind setting, default espresso program), each bean used for one week, with a focused tasting every three days. Beans involved: Qianjie Commercial Blend, Specialty Blend, Dark Cocoa Blend, Strawberry Candy Blend, PWN Indonesia Golden Mandheling.
Commercial Blend: compatibility five stars. The safe choice for fully automatic machines; whether extracted in the morning or evening, and regardless of how much is left in the bean hopper, the output is always balanced and stable, with balanced bitterness and sweetness and no off-flavors. Crema performance is medium but stable, and the crema color is consistent every day. The drawback is that the flavor has no highlights, but as a daily functional coffee, it completes all its tasks.
Specialty Blend: compatibility four and a half stars. The nutty caramel flavor is fully preserved under the fully automatic programmed extraction, and the sweetness is noticeably one level higher than the Commercial Blend, with a darker crema color and finer texture. The slight deduction is that the second cup in continuous brewing is a little lighter than the first cup in the morning; after a half-hour interval this phenomenon disappears.
Dark Cocoa Blend: compatibility five stars. The surprise pick for fully automatic scenarios; the cocoa flavor main line remains clear through programmed extraction, and the output is like a lightly sweetened freshly ground cocoa. The crema thickness is among the top of the five, and the carbon dioxide reserves of the dark-roasted beans are fully brought out in the freshly ground and freshly extracted process. After adding milk, the cocoa feel does not diminish, making it the fully automatic top choice for milk coffee.
Strawberry Candy Blend: compatibility four stars. The fruity sweetness is discernible on the fully automatic machine, but the clarity is discounted, as programmed extraction struggles to finely optimize fruit acidity. Even so, its flavor uniqueness among the five is still worth a try, and users who like fruity notes can accept this loss.
Golden Mandheling: compatibility three and a half stars. Flavor intensity and crema thickness are the highest of the five, with rich dark brown crema and strong visual impact. There are two deductions: first, the strong herbal aroma may be too heavy for those unfamiliar with it; second, the surface of dark-roasted beans has more oil, and in the later stage of testing slight oil buildup was observed at the bean hopper discharge port, requiring more frequent cleaning.
Overall recommendation: fully automatic users can choose beans according to the framework of "Dark Cocoa Blend as the daily mainstay, Specialty Blend for rotation, Strawberry Candy for fruity preference," and will basically not go wrong. The overall advice is also simple: the upper limit of a De'Longhi fully automatic machine's output is determined by the beans, and the lower limit is determined by cleaning. If the beans are chosen well, and monthly descaling and burr maintenance are done well, this machine can stably output above-standard home espresso.
