In Asia, there are many coffee-producing countries, such as Laos, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, China and Thailand. Among them, although Timor-Leste is not large in land area and has relatively low name recognition, it also produces quite a lot of high-quality coffee.

Timor-Leste

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, an island country located at the eastern end of the Nusa Tenggara archipelago, includes the eastern part of Timor and the Oecusse region on the western north coast, as well as the nearby Atauro Island and Jaco Island at the eastern end. To the west it borders West Timor, Indonesia, and to the south it faces Australia across the Timor Sea. Its land area is 15007 square kilometers.

The flag of Timor-Leste is rectangular, with a red field and, on the left side, a black equilateral triangle overlapping a yellow isosceles triangle; on the black equilateral triangle there is a white five-pointed star. The red represents the struggle of the people of Timor-Leste for independence and freedom, the black triangle represents the need to overcome anti-Enlightenment forces, and the yellow triangle represents the traces of colonial rule by countries such as Portugal and Indonesia; at the center there is a small star tilted slightly to the left, representing the light that guides independence and freedom.

Timor-Leste is mostly mountainous, with 3/4 of its land consisting of hills, and most mountainous areas have an elevation of more than 1000 m, while there are plains and valleys along the coast. In Timor-Leste, coffee is basically grown organically, with chemical agents and insecticides rarely used, because Timor-Leste's agriculture itself is more traditional and because Timor-Leste is a poor country with no funds to buy pesticides and other chemicals.

Most areas of Timor-Leste have a tropical rainforest climate, while the plains and valley bottoms have a tropical savanna climate, with an average temperature of 26°C and annual rainfall of 1200-1500 mm. It has high-altitude areas, volcanic soil, and appropriate rainfall; these geographical conditions provide favorable conditions for coffee cultivation.

Coffee Regions

The coffee regions of East Timor mainly include Ermera, Manufahi, Ainaro, Liquica, Aileu and Bobonaro, among which the most famous is Ermera, whose coffee production accounts for 50% of the country's total production.

Ermera: Located in western East Timor, it is an inland municipality where coffee grows on peaks at an average altitude of 1250 m. The average temperature in the area is around 21°C, with rainfall of 2500-3000 mm, making it very suitable for coffee tree growth.

Coffee Varieties

On the island of Timor, the better known coffee variety is the Timor variety "Hibrido de Timor". Hibrido de Timor is a natural hybrid of Arabica and Robusta, first discovered in the 20th century, and became popular for its relatively high resistance to coffee leaf rust, insect pests and other diseases.

Because it is a natural hybrid of Arabica and Robusta, it belongs to the Arabica coffee plant, but it carries the disease-resistance genes of the Robusta species. Therefore, the Timor variety was crossed with Caturra, producing the first generation of F1 hybrid variety group, which is today's Catimor.

And in 1961, the Colombian research center began research, studying leaf-rust-resistant varieties such as Caturra and Timor Hybrid, and after 23 years of research, developed 6 varieties such as Castillo, and from 2005 began to be widely planted.
