In South America, there is a country rich in natural resources, known globally for its “four treasures”: coffee, flowers, gold, and emeralds. This country, known as the “Land of Gold” and the world’s third-largest coffee producer, is Colombia (República de Colombia).

Colombia’s terrain is broadly divided into western mountainous regions and eastern plains, along with multiple coastal plains. The eastern part mainly consists of the Orinoco Plain and the Amazon Plain, while the northern part is home to the country’s highest peak, Mount Cristóbal Colón, which stands at an elevation of 5,800 meters. Within Colombia, the Andes Mountains are divided into the Eastern, Central, and Western Cordilleras, with an average elevation of over 3,000 meters and a total length of 800 kilometers, featuring numerous volcanoes and rivers.

Coffee Growing Regions

Colombia has a relatively large land area and a well-developed agricultural sector, which means it has multiple coffee-growing regions. Due to factors such as mountainous terrain and varying microclimates, the flavor of coffee produced in each region can differ significantly. Colombia has two harvest seasons per year: the main season from October to January, and the secondary season from April to July. Currently, some of the more renowned coffee-growing regions in Colombia include Antioquia, Santander, Huila, Nariño, and Cauca.

Nariño (Narino): Located in the southwest of the country, it borders the Pacific Ocean to the west and Ecuador to the south. The Andes Mountains run across the province, and coffee is grown on volcanic soils at elevations of 1,600–2,300 meters. With its majestic mountains and numerous rivers flowing through the region toward the south, it is part of Colombia’s high-altitude coffee-growing area and is home to many smallholder farmers producing specialty coffee. Nariño Province has an annual total production of about 150,000 bags.

Huila: Huila Province is located in southern Colombia, also in the southern part of the Central Cordillera, formed by the central and eastern ranges of the Andes Mountains. Most of the region lies in the Magdalena River Valley and is Colombia’s most renowned specialty coffee-producing area, with over 70,000 coffee farmers and more than 16,000 hectares under cultivation. This area features hilly terrain surrounded by mountains, with coffee grown at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 meters. The high altitude, volcanic soils, abundant water resources, and unique climate result in coffees with clean, balanced, and soft flavors. Front Street offers several coffee beans from this region, and the famous Finca La Divisa is also located here.
