In Central America, many countries grow coffee due to their location within the coffee belt, including several well-known coffee-producing nations such as Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica. Among them, Costa Rica is the world’s 14th largest coffee producer and the first country in Central America to cultivate coffee.
Costa Rica has a tropical and subtropical climate, with a rainy season (April to December) and a dry season (late December to April of the following year). The country enjoys mild and suitable temperatures, abundant rainfall, and volcanic soil rich in minerals, making it highly suitable for agriculture. As a result, Costa Rica has become a major global exporter of pineapples, bananas, and coffee.
Tarrazu: The Tarrazu region is the largest and most well-known coffee-producing area in the country, located within the province of San José. Originally, this region was called Los Santos, and it includes the towns of Tarrazu, Dota, and the administrative areas of Leon Cortes Castro.
And at the Cup of Excellence (COE) in Costa Rica, most of the winning farms are from the Tarrazú region. The farm that scored the highest, 93.62, at this year's COE was Don Cayito from the Tarrazú region.
The estate is currently managed by Luis Ricardo Calderón Madrigal and his family, covering an area of 6 hectares. In fact, the owner Luis took over La Estrella Estate, which was only 4 hectares at the time, from his father in 1998. By 2009, he had also set up a micro-processing facility, and in 2011, he won the COE championship, bringing his family to international prominence.
