According to Indonesian media reports, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck an area 24 km southeast of Bandung, West Java Province, on the island of Java, Indonesia, on the morning of September 18. The earthquake has so far injured 82 people and damaged more than 700 houses.

According to a report from the West Java Provincial Disaster Management Agency, the epicenter of this earthquake was at a depth of 10 km and occurred mainly on land, so it will not trigger a tsunami. However, it has had quite an impact on the Bandung area. At present, a total of 11 trains have been temporarily suspended, and about 700 houses have been damaged, including buildings of institutions such as schools and hospitals. In addition, 82 people were injured in this earthquake, 23 of them seriously, but fortunately no fatalities have been reported so far.

Afterward, 26 aftershocks occurred, so the West Java Provincial Disaster Management Agency is still carrying out detailed statistics and assessments of the casualties and damaged buildings from this earthquake. Meanwhile, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of the Jakarta area near Bandung has issued a warning to Jakarta residents that a major earthquake or a mega-thrust earthquake could occur in the future, and preparations need to be made.

It is understood that Java is one of Indonesia's main coffee-producing regions and the country's second-largest coffee-producing area, with output second only to Sumatra. The area where this earthquake occurred is the region near Bandung in West Java Province on Java, which is an important coffee-producing area on the island. The earthquake may cause damage to coffee plantations here, crushing coffee trees and damaging irrigation systems, among other effects, and will directly affect the growth or yield of coffee trees.

Besides Java, another Indonesian island has also been affected by natural disasters. According to monitoring by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Aceh region in northern Sumatra and surrounding areas recently experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds. According to monitoring data, the maximum wind speed reached 55.56 km per hour, approaching hurricane level.

According to local media reports, due to the impact of heavy rain and strong winds, multiple buildings, sports facilities and school facilities in the Aceh region have been damaged. In addition, one local student tragically died after a classroom ceiling collapsed. According to data from the Medan center of Indonesia's meteorological agency BMKG, extreme weather conditions in Medan, Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau and West Sumatra and other areas may continue until the end of September in the coming days. At present, the rainfall potential in these areas is assessed as high level, reaching more than 70%, and because of the heavy rainfall, it may cause secondary disasters such as landslides and floods.

In response, people in Indonesia's coffee industry said that this heavy rainfall will have a serious impact on the country's coffee industry, because coffee production on the island of Sumatra accounts for more than 60% of the country's total production, and September to October each year is the main harvest season for Indonesian coffee. Due to the heavy rainfall and windy weather, people's outdoor activities are restricted, the harvest work will be delayed, and the progress of coffee harvesting will be hindered. Heavy rainfall and windy weather will knock down some fruit that is about to ripen or has already ripened, leading to a reduction in production.

In addition, according to the report, East Nusa Tenggara, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, West Java and Banten provinces in Indonesia are experiencing extreme drought conditions, with no rain for more than two months, and in some areas the drought has lasted as long as 144 days. This situation has brought severe impacts on multiple coffee-producing regions in Indonesia.

According to an earlier coffee industry report released by the International Coffee Organization (ICO), coffee production in the Asia-Pacific region is gradually declining, with only 2.77 million bags of coffee exported from the Asia-Pacific region in July, a decrease of 8.1% compared with the same period last year. The main coffee-exporting countries in the Asia-Pacific region are Vietnam and Indonesia.

At the beginning of this year, Vietnam reported its worst drought in nearly a decade, with many coffee plants withering from lack of water, leading to a severe drop in coffee production, and since the 2023/24 crop year Vietnam's coffee exports have fallen 12.71% compared with the same period last year. As for Indonesia, it has been suffering from natural disasters since the start of this year, with coffee production declining at one point; an earlier forecast put the reduction at 50%, but based on the current situation the production loss may be even more severe, and this will keep coffee prices at a high level.
