The terrain of Central America consists mainly of highlands, mountains and forests, and it has a volcanic belt more than 1300 km long. Because of the accumulation of volcanic ash, the soil is fertile, and combined with the diverse climate here, many countries in Central America are known for producing coffee, such as Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama.Among them, Honduras has become the second-largest coffee exporter in Central America and the tenth-largest in the world. While its output is high, Honduras also maintains a high-quality level.

According to historical records, coffee was first introduced to Honduras by Spanish merchants in the late 18th century at the earliest, and was planted on a small scale. However, coffee cultivation is a long-term investment, and most farmers could not wait, so they still relied on other crops to support the economy. After several years of development, it got through the initial stage.

In 1970, the Honduran Coffee Association (IHCAFE) was formally established, dedicated to improving coffee quality, and six major production regions were designated within the organization. However, because several neighboring countries were also coffee exporters, competition was fierce, and at the same time Honduras had poor transportation conditions, so coffee was basically produced and sold locally. It was not until 2001, after Honduras's transportation construction was improved, that coffee production began to grow substantially, and coffee bean exports gradually replaced the economic status of other crops.

More than three-quarters of Honduras is mountainous and highland terrain, with mountain ranges extending from west to east, a volcanic plateau inland, numerous intermontane valleys, plains along the coast, and forest covering about half of the national territory. Honduras has a tropical climate, the coastal plains have a tropical rainforest climate, and the average annual temperature is 23°C. Honduras is rich in natural resources, with high-altitude mountain areas, volcanic soil and a diverse climate, conditions that make the country very suitable for growing coffee and other crops.

The Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE) has designated six major production regions: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, Agalta Tropical and El Paraiso.

Among them, the Comayagua region has performed well in recent years. The region is located in the center-west of the country, between the Comayagua Department and the Francisco Morazán Department.

This area is mostly pine forest and grassland, high mountains, marsh and tropical rainforest, with an average altitude of 1100 - 1700 m and annual rainfall of 1350 - 1700 mm, providing a high-quality growing environment for coffee. This region is dominated by lemon flavors, with an obvious sweet fruit aroma, a creamier, richer mouthfeel, along with citrus sweetness and notes of sweetness and chocolate.

At this year's Honduras COE, El Gravileo farm from the Gongma Agua region stood out. Although it only took 18th place, it achieved an excellent score of 88.07 and was the only winner from the region. The owner of El Gravileo farm is Lester Marquez. At first the farm had only some oak trees, and it was only later that he began growing coffee and other crops. At first he planted the Parainem variety, but this variety is better suited to growing at low to medium altitudes, while the estate's altitude is close to 1800 m, so he later switched to growing Typica.

Later, through some trading companies, he met some international coffee buyers. These buyers believed that the estate's coffee was of high quality, and therefore encouraged the estate owner to take part in the COE, and this year was the estate's first time participating in the COE, and it won a place. Therefore, the estate owner said that through the auction he could obtain more funds to invest in the farm, which could help the coffee grown on the farm reach even higher quality in the coming years.
