The price gap between auction lots and daily-drink beans: What’s behind the flavor?

Open the bean list of some coffee shops, and the prices often span two worlds: on one side are auction-lot beans sold for dozens of yuan per cup, and on the other are everyday beans at just over a hundred yuan for half a pound. They are all coffee, so where does the price gap come from, and is it worth it? This is a question many pour-over enthusiasts cannot avoid. This account has to be calculated from three angles together: scarcity, flavor performance and drinking scenario.

Auction beans come from major green bean competitions and auction systems. Estates send their standout lots of the year to cupping and bidding, and both the score and the final price are recorded. A bean's background, processing details and plot altitude are all clear. What you buy is not just a bag of beans, but a traceable quality endorsement, and rarity determines that it is destined to be tasted by only a few people. At some auctions, the final price is even written into the estate's history and becomes the story of the next harvest season.

Qianjie Panama Geisha is a representative of this side. The Geisha variety itself has a gorgeous aroma, with layers of jasmine, citrus and peach unfolding one after another in the cup, and the entry is so light it hardly seems like coffee. This kind of flavor experience does have a threshold, but it provides a one-time aesthetic experience, similar to going to a live performance: what you drink is the moment itself.

The logic of everyday beans is completely different. They mostly come from stable lots in mature regions. The flavor may not be stunning, but their strength lies in balance, drinkability and a friendly price. Qianjie Queen's Estate's nutty and creamy profile, and Qianjie Yirgacheffe Gudingding's clean citrus, are both types you can drink every day without getting tired of them. Daily practice and parameter exploration are also well suited to this kind of bean. Between the two there are also classic beans at specialty grade, such as Qianjie Golden Mandheling, which has undergone strict grading and selection, has a solid and stable flavor, yet still falls within the everyday price range.

Expensive beans also have another often overlooked use: calibrating the palate. If you drink a high-quality estate lot once in a while, your senses will remember what clearly layered means and what a long finish means, and when you go back to drinking everyday beans, you can more keenly tell what is good and what is ordinary. What this money buys is actually a ruler, not daily rations. Once the ruler has been used for a long time, your judgment naturally becomes accurate.

A reasonable setup varies from person to person: if the budget is limited, focus on everyday beans and choose two or three with different styles to rotate; if you want to upgrade the experience, open a bean with pedigree on a special day, brew it carefully and drink it slowly. When this flavor account is calculated, it is not about how expensive the beans are, but about drinking every cup with understanding, so that every penny spent can be converted into accumulated taste.
