After drip bag coffee packs appeared, quite a few people got into the habit of comparing pour-over coffee with drip bag coffee and belittling the very existence of drip bag coffee packs. In fact, drip bag coffee came about precisely to make things convenient, so you can brew a cup of single-origin coffee anytime and anywhere in a simple, quick way, with no complicated equipment and no fiddly operation. FrontStreet believes that although drip bag coffee counts as a type of pour-over coffee and also extracts the coffee's flavors through drip filtration, the people who buy drip bag coffee from the FrontStreet Coffee Taobao store are after convenience while also avoiding having to choose unhealthy instant coffee.

What Is Drip Filtration Extraction? Must Drip Bag Coffee Always Be Extracted by Drip Filtration?

Drip filtration extraction means pouring water so that as it passes through the coffee grounds it releases the coffee's flavor molecules, which blend with the water and drip out through the filter paper. Coffee brewed this way has a better sense of layers, and the coffee's flavors are relatively balanced. But drip bag coffee does not necessarily have to be extracted by drip filtration; its whole point is to reduce the steps in brewing coffee, and you can also choose a short immersion, but remember that the immersion time must not exceed 1 minute 30 seconds.

The Production Process of Drip Coffee Bags

Before making drip coffee bags, FrontStreet always puts on a hairnet and a mask, cleans and disinfects the hands, then puts on sterilized gloves before grinding the freshly roasted coffee beans, packaging the drip coffee bags, and sealing and packing them.

① Wearing a hairnet prevents hair from falling into the food; wearing a mask prevents droplets from contaminating the food; cleaning and disinfecting the hands effectively removes 99.9% of bacteria; wearing sterile gloves reduces bacterial contamination of the food.

② FrontStreet Coffee uses freshly roasted coffee beans that have completed their carbon dioxide release before grinding for its drip coffee bags. Before grinding each type of coffee bean, the grinder is cleaned to avoid flavor transfer. For drip coffee grinding, FrontStreet uses a fine grind (90% passing through a No. 20 standard sieve), which ensures that everyone can brew a delicious single-origin coffee with the simplest tools under any conditions.

③ After the coffee beans are ground into powder, they are put into a non-woven bag with a "paper drip hanger", for example, and sealed for the first time with a sealing machine. After the drip coffee bag is sealed, it is packaged a second time with outer packaging and sealed. This makes each individual drip coffee bag, which slows down the dissipation of the drip coffee's flavor and also makes it convenient for everyone to take drip coffee out with them.

How many varieties of FrontStreet Coffee drip coffee are there?

The most popular at FrontStreet Coffee both online and in physical stores are the FrontStreet seasonal drip coffee, the FrontStreet Yirgacheffe drip coffee, and the FrontStreet Indonesian Mandheling drip coffee

FrontStreet Mandheling coffee comes from the northern part of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, which has a relatively high altitude and, together with its climate characteristics, is very suitable for growing Arabica varieties. Among these, the Aceh Province around Lake Tawar and the North Sumatra Province around Lake Toba are the most representative, and the Lintong producing area is located within North Sumatra Province.

Mandheling coffee is grown at an altitude of 750-1500 m on the Gayo Highlands, which are located near the equator and have a typical tropical rainforest climate, with rain all year round and relatively high air temperature and humidity, making them very suitable for growing Arabica varieties. However, this accounts for only 25% of Indonesia's total coffee production; locally in Indonesia, Robusta grown at low altitudes is the majority. Mandheling coffee is mainly grown with the two varieties Ateng and Tim Tim. Tim Tim is a natural hybrid of the Arabica variety Typica and Robusta, that is, Timor, which inherits Robusta's high yield and disease resistance and expresses a strong mouthfeel in flavor.Mandheling coffee is mainly grown with the two varieties Ateng and Tim Tim. FrontStreet Lintong Mandheling refers to the Mandheling coffee produced in the Lintong mountain area in northern Sumatra. Lintong is close to the southwest side of Lake Toba, with an altitude between 1000-1500 m. There are multiple volcanoes and volcanic lakes here. The fertile volcanic soil plus the local tropical rainforest climate, with abundant rainfall all year round, lets the coffee trees grow vigorously. The Mandheling produced here has a unique aroma, and when a deep roast is used it presents distinctive flavors such as wood and spice. FrontStreet believes that the wet-hulled FrontStreet Lintong Mandheling has a typical Mandheling flavor, so it has been added to the daily beans and drip bag series.

What water temperature should be used to brew drip coffee?

Because FrontStreet grinds the coffee finer when making drip coffee, the recommended brewing water temperature is 88-90°C. Too high a temperature will cause the coffee flavor to be released rapidly and then extract the taste of the coffee's woody fibers (coffee grounds), making it prone to unpleasant flavors such as bitterness; too low a temperature will prevent the coffee flavor from being fully released, making the coffee taste dull and flat.

How many times can drip coffee be brewed?

After brewing a drip coffee bag, remember to take it out promptly, and do not brew it a second time. FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags are good in quality and low in price, so you do not need to feel it is a waste; this is the coffee bean's "mission" in the first place.

How long can drip bag coffee packets be stored?

Although the drip bag coffee packets sold by FrontStreet are sealed in individual packaging, the coffee particles become smaller after grinding, so the flavor still dissipates relatively quickly. Therefore, FrontStreet recommends a storage time of 30 days for drip bag coffee packets.

How do you brew drip bag coffee packets?

First, tear open the outer packaging of the drip bag and take out the coffee filter bag inside. Then tear along the dotted line printed with "OPEN" on the coffee filter bag, open up the drip bag, and then unfold the two cardboard "ears" of the drip bag and hang them on the rim of a cup or pot. The net content of coffee grounds in FrontStreet Coffee's drip bags is 10g, and FrontStreet recommends a brewing ratio of 1:15. Coffee brewed at this ratio has the most balanced and stable flavor.

First, pour in a small amount of hot water for the first pour to make sure all the coffee grounds are wet, and let it bloom for 10 to 20 seconds so that the carbon dioxide in the coffee grounds is released, ensuring the stability of the subsequent coffee extraction. For the second pour, pour water until it is near the edge of the filter bag, then stop pouring. After the coffee liquid drops by half, pour water again until it is near the edge of the filter bag. There are three pours in total. Wait for all the remaining coffee liquid to drip through the coffee grounds into the cup, then remove the drip bag and enjoy.
