Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States released a report stating that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be “extraordinary,” with the upcoming hurricane season potentially facing risks up to three times higher than usual.
It is understood that the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Over the past three decades, an average hurricane season has produced 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. However, NOAA predicts a surge in hurricane activity this year.
Therefore, the report points out that multiple countries in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and across the Atlantic will be affected by hurricane activity. It calls on various nations to take measures to guard against environmental disasters and protect production, assets, and worker safety.
In addition, since this hurricane may be even stronger, countries in Central America such as Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica may not be spared either.
As early as 2020, Central America was hit by two severe hurricanes, which triggered catastrophic floods and landslides locally, damaging some coffee farms and ultimately leading to varying degrees of coffee production reduction in multiple Central American countries.
In addition to affecting coffee production in the region, coffee exports from Central American countries were also impacted. Since coffee beans typically rely on shipping for export, major hurricanes can disrupt shipping routes, causing port shutdowns, container backlogs, and shipping disruptions that can last for weeks, resulting in a sharp increase in transportation costs and time.
