Central America is rich in natural resources. Its terrain is dominated by plateaus, mountains and forests, and it has a volcanic belt stretching more than 1,300 km. Volcanic ash accumulates, making the soil fertile, and together with the region's diverse climate, this gives Central American coffee an important place in the global coffee market. The region is home to many well-known coffee-producing countries, such as Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama. Among them, Honduras maintains high quality coffee while also achieving high yields.

Honduras's ability to produce high-quality coffee benefits from its local terrain and climate. Honduras has complex terrain: more than 90% of the country's terrain is mountains and plateaus, the interior is a lava plateau with many intermontane valleys, forest area accounts for about half of the country's total area, and the national average altitude is 900-1500 m.

In addition, Honduras has a diverse climate, mainly tropical. The coastal plains have a tropical rainforest climate, while the mountains have a subtropical forest climate, with an average annual temperature of 23°C. June to November is the rainy season, with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall. Together with high-altitude mountain areas and volcanic soil, this makes it an ideal place for coffee to grow.

Coffee was first introduced to Honduras in the 18th century by Spanish merchants, but at that time Honduran farmers mainly grew crops such as bananas, and coffee was planted only on a small scale. By the end of the 19th century, many coffee plantations had been established in Honduras, but they were not large in scale, and because the port transport infrastructure was backward, Honduran coffee was difficult to export and could only be sold domestically.

By the 20th century, the coffee industry developed steadily. Roads and ports were built in Honduras, making exports more convenient, and the Honduran Coffee Institute (Instituto Hondureño del Cafe, IHCAFE for short) was established to help improve local coffee quality. But afterward, Honduras was hit by a hurricane, and following the hurricane came an outbreak of coffee leaf rust, which dealt a severe blow to the industry. However, through hard work, the coffee industry slowly recovered and became an important pillar of Honduras's economy.

The Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE) has divided the country into six producing regions: Copan, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, Agalta Tropical and El Paraiso, and all of these regions sit at altitudes above 1,100 m.

At present, Montecillos and Comayagua are the country's better-known producing regions. In the 2024 Honduras Cup of Excellence (COE), most of the estates came from these two regions, but other regions also performed well, such as Opalaca.

The Opalaca region lies between the departments of Santa Bárbara, Intibucá and Lempira, with most of its area in the department of Lempira in the west of the country. It is home to the country's highest peak, Las Minas Mountain, at 2,849 m; it is a volcano, and coffee is grown on slopes from 1,100-1,700 m. Annual rainfall here reaches 1,350-1,900 mm, and with high altitude, volcanic soil and ample sunshine and water, it is very well suited to coffee growing.

and gives the coffee produced locally a very delicate acidity, an overall balanced expression, a mouthfeel with tropical fruits such as grapes and mulberries, a sweet-and-sour finish, a strong lemon flavor, balanced by the sweetness of honey and caramel, with pronounced fruity notes

The better-known estate in this region is La Fresa estate, which is currently managed by Mardo Antonio Vasquez. Mardo has been growing coffee for 21 years. At the beginning it was very difficult, but through continuous cultivation practice he gradually improved the coffee quality and began to take part in competitions in Lempira department, gaining competition experience and knowledge there. Later he began to take part in Honduras' Cup of Excellence COE, and at the 2023 COE he achieved the excellent result of 3rd place.
