According to a report by Mexico's National Meteorological Service on local time July 31, Tropical Storm Carlotta, which formed in the Pacific Ocean, made landfall in Mexico and triggered heavy rain and flooding in the western part of the country, causing severe economic losses to the region.

According to the meteorological service report, Carlotta had maximum sustained winds of 75 km per hour, and over the past 24 hours Carlotta intensified from Category 11 to Category 13, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km per hour. It brought heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and hail to western Mexico, currently mainly affecting Colima, Jalisco, Michoacan and Nayarit. Although Storm Carlotta has now left Mexican territory and is moving in a west-northwest direction, it will still bring risks of large waves and strong winds along the coast.

It is understood that Colima, Jalisco, Michoacan and Nayarit are all important agricultural and livestock states in Mexico, mainly producing wheat, corn, sugarcane, coffee and fruit, and these regions produce about 15% of Mexico's coffee output.

In addition, apart from these states, the areas along the hurricane's path also pose a threat to nearby regions, because the hurricane will bring strong winds and heavy rain around the areas it passes through, and may trigger large-scale flooding, landslides and other disasters, and may damage local infrastructure, especially in the neighboring states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.

Moreover, according to Mexico's National Meteorological Service, on June 19, Tropical Storm Alberto had formed in the Gulf of Mexico and was to make landfall on the 20th, causing heavy rainstorms in Veracruz, Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas and other places, while other states and cities were also affected with strong rainfall, resulting in multiple deaths.

Recently, Mexico's coffee trees have been in their flowering period, and during this time hurricanes and heavy rain will knock some berries off the trees, while floods and hail will directly damage the coffee growing environment and some infrastructure, ultimately reducing coffee production. Mexico is a coffee-producing country that grows both Arabica and Robusta varieties, and heavy rain has a greater impact on the Robusta varieties grown at lower altitudes.

Also, in early July, the Chinese Embassy in Mexico reminded Chinese citizens in Mexico and those planning to visit Mexico soon to take precautions against meteorological disasters, ensure their personal safety, closely monitor weather changes, avoid mountainous areas and low-lying areas prone to secondary disasters such as flash floods, mudslides and landslides, and make preparations in advance.

In recent years, due to rising coffee prices, Mexico has been continuously improving its coffee-growing environment and encouraging coffee cultivation. At the beginning of this year, Mexico released a coffee report, stating that coffee production in the 2024/25 marketing year is expected to reach 3.89 million bags. However, recently local reports from Mexico indicate that the coffee industry has been affected by climate, having experienced high temperatures, drought and insufficient rainfall in the first half of the year. About 80% of Mexico's coffee-growing area has been affected, and industry insiders expect a 50% reduction in production. The current storm may make the production decline even worse.

At the beginning of 6 month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a report stating that the peak of hurricane season is approaching, and reported that this year's hurricane risk is three times stronger than usual. According to data released by Mexico's National Water Commission, as many as 41 tropical cyclones will form in the Atlantic and Pacific this year, of which 5 will affect Mexico, so preventive measures need to be taken.
