Ethiopia is currently the largest coffee-producing country in Africa and is widely recognized as the birthplace of coffee. Thanks to Ethiopia's rich natural resources, the coffee it produces is deeply loved by many coffee enthusiasts for its unique floral and citrus notes. When it comes to what represents Ethiopian natural coffee beans, many people think of "Huakui."

"Huakui" (so named because its full name is Ethiopia Guji Hambella Buku Abel, named Huakui by a Chinese coffee trader) refers to a naturally processed coffee bean produced at the Buku Abel processing station in the Guji Hambella region of Ethiopia. Currently at FrontStreet Coffee, it has already reached "Huakui 8.0", and when brewed it has tropical fruit flavors such as dried mango, citrus and jackfruit, with a full juicy body, a rounded mouthfeel, a black tea-like sweet aftertaste and rich layers.

This coffee bean rose to fame in 2017, when Ethiopian DW Coffee Company submitted the "Huakui" coffee bean to compete in the TOH green bean competition, and with its rich berry aroma and creamy texture it won the championship in the natural group.

So what exactly is this TOH competition that made "Huakui" famous? In fact, the TOH (Taste of Harvest) competition is also known as the Harvest Season Flavor Competition. It is similar to the globally renowned COE (Cup Of Excellence) competition, but the TOH competition is a green bean competition organized by the African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA).

The African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA) is a membership-based non-profit association founded in July 2000, mainly representing coffee producers, traders, governments and other supporting organizations. AFCF currently consists of 11 member countries, including Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.

At the beginning of each year, AFCA holds the harvest-season flavor competition, the TOH competition, which is an annual coffee quality competition held in AFCA member countries. However, the TOH first divides into national competitions (NATIONAL) and the African regional final (REGIONAL). Because some countries grow both Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties at the same time, national competitions are held for both varieties; in addition, the Arabica variety is further divided into washed, natural and honey processing groups.

The winners of the national competitions can represent their country in the African regional final held each year at the African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition (hosted by member countries in rotation). Therefore, all competition samples are graded using the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scoring system and cupping, and finally a panel of experienced and certified judges selects the top 5 in the 3 Arabica processing groups and the Robusta coffee group.

AFCA holds the Harvest Season Flavor Competition TOH to promote the finest coffees from across Africa. The winning coffees from each country are showcased at the African Fine Coffees Conference and Exhibition, and are also promoted at international trade exhibitions and other coffee events, with the aim of helping African coffee-producing countries develop the coffee trade, improve coffee quality, and attract the attention and purchases of international buyers.

At the beginning of this year, the African Fine Coffees Association AFCA partnered with the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority to hold the 2024 Harvest Season Flavor Competition TOH in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
