Recently, extreme weather events have been occurring frequently around the world, and climate change is severely impacting Asia. In recent times, due to adverse weather conditions, multiple regions in Indonesia have suffered from disasters such as heavy rain, floods, volcanic eruptions, and landslides, causing damage to various industries in the country, including the coffee industry.
Recently, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) of Indonesia, South Sulawesi Province in Indonesia has been hit by heavy rainfall. In the early hours of the 3rd, continuous downpours triggered floods accompanied by landslides.
In addition, heavy rainfall also occurred in Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi Province. Due to the intense rain, multiple rivers of varying sizes in the area overflowed, causing severe flooding, with over a thousand hectares of farmland submerged.
This time, the heavy rain, floods, and landslides mainly affected South Sulawesi Province. However, the current disaster has had relatively little impact on the Arabica specialty coffee production areas in the region, with the Robusta coffee production areas being the most severely hit.
Normally, most parts of Indonesia should enter the dry season in April, but the Indonesian Meteorological Agency predicts that due to climate instability, the dry season will be delayed even later, which will affect the growth process of agricultural products. Currently, potential impacts such as flash floods, landslides, and extreme weather need to be guarded against.
