In Central America, the favorable geographical environment and climate make it very suitable for growing coffee and other crops. Among them, the first country in Central America to start growing coffee was Costa Rica, which has now also become the world's 14th largest coffee producer.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is located on the Central American isthmus, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, with Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast. Most of the country is mountainous and highland terrain, with more than 200 volcanoes, and the Cordillera mountain system runs through the entire country.

Costa Rica has a tropical and subtropical climate, with the year divided into a rainy season (April to December) and a dry season (late December to April of the following year). The mild and suitable temperatures, abundant rainfall, and the rich minerals that volcanic ash gives to the soil make it very suitable for agricultural cultivation such as coffee.

Coffee Regions

Today, tiny Costa Rica grows more than 400 million coffee trees, and there are 7 coffee regions in total: Valle Central Occidental (Western Valley), Valle Central (Central Valley), Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Orosi, Brunca and Turrialba, and almost all of these regions are distributed across the central mountain range.

Tarrazu: The Tarrazu region is the country's largest and best-known region, located in the province of San Jose, and in fact the region was originally named Los Santos.

However, because Tarrazu became famous earlier within the area, in 2019 the Costa Rican government registered the coffee designation of origin "Cafe de Tarrazu" with the European Union and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), so people have become used to classifying the broader region under the name "Tarrazu". In addition, the region is famous because in Costa Rica's Cup of Excellence (COE), most of the winning estates come from the Tarrazu region.

This region is influenced by the warm, humid air currents of the Pacific Ocean, with annual rainfall reaching 2400 mm and an average temperature of 19°C. Coffee is grown at elevations of 1500-2100 m, making this the highest-altitude producing region in Costa Rica.

Finca Voo

Finca Voo is located in the Copey de Dota area of the Tarrazu region, on a hillside at 1960 m. This allows the crops to be brushed by Pacific sea breezes and to receive ample sunlight during the day, while protecting the crops from the weather influence of the Atlantic.

Finca Voo currently belongs to the estates under Café Solís & Cordero S.A. The company was founded in 2018 by the Solís Cordero family, with the original aim of providing fair and stable business for coffee producers in the region. In addition, one of the company's owners, Iván Solís, has more than 22 years of experience in coffee processing and commercialization.

Finca Voo is a newly acquired estate of the Solís family, and all family members actively participate in this estate. Through growing avocados, developing animal husbandry and cultivating various crops, they create an environment more conducive to producing high-quality coffee. As a result, the estate competed in Costa Rica's COE competition in 2023 and took second place with the Catuai variety, scoring 91 points. In this year's COE competition, also using the Catuai variety, it took first place in the Experimental processing category with 91.19 points.
