The economy of Central America is primarily agricultural, with tropical cash crops such as bananas, coffee and sugarcane grown for export being the most important, because the region's terrain is dominated by plateaus, mountains and forests, and it has a volcanic belt stretching more than 1,300 km.

Thanks to the accumulation of volcanic ash, the soil is fertile, and combined with the region's diverse climate, quite a few countries in Central America are known for producing coffee, such as Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Although Nicaragua is not as well known as Costa Rica, Panama and others, Nicaragua's coffee-growing conditions are no worse than those of other Central American countries.

Nicaragua's coffee history began with the arrival of colonisers in the mid-19th century, when the first coffee trees were planted in the plains of Nicaragua near the Pacific. By the late 20th century, Nicaragua's political turmoil and civil war had a severe impact on the local coffee industry, and many coffee farms were abandoned at the time. Then, in 1998, Hurricane Mitch struck, destroying most of the coffee infrastructure, and the hurricane was followed by drought, which dealt a severe blow to the country's economy.

From 1999 to 2003, Nicaragua was still in a period of recovery, but at that time the coffee price crisis affected the global coffee industry, and farmers struggled to make a living, surviving only by growing fruit and vegetables. Later, cooperatives played an important role in rebuilding Nicaragua's coffee industry. As the coffee market matured, local cooperatives supported their members by building new processing infrastructure, providing training, developing strong quality assurance programmes and training full-time staff, helping farmers cope with the changing coffee industry.

The development of Nicaragua's coffee industry has benefited from the country's growing conditions. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, with numerous volcanoes and lakes within its borders. The central and northern parts of the country are highlands, and most coffee is grown there.

The highland plains are hot and rainy, with a tropical maritime climate, an average temperature of 18°C, annual precipitation of about 1500-2500 mm, and a rainy season from May to December each year. With fertile soil given by volcanoes, suitable temperatures, and abundant water resources, it is very suitable for coffee to grow here.

The country is mainly divided into three producing regions: Jinotega, Matagalpa, and Nueva Segovias, all of which are concentrated in the northern part of the country.

Among them, Nueva Segovias has begun to emerge in recent years, appearing regularly on Nicaragua's COE list. Nueva Segovias is located on Nicaragua's northern border, adjacent to Honduras, and is one of the country's highest-altitude coffee producing regions, with growing altitudes of around 1100-1650 m. The relatively low humidity here allows the sugars in the coffee cherries to concentrate, and together with the region's volcanic soil and rainforest cover, this gives the coffee high sweetness and complex flavors.

The region is home to a number of well-known coffee farms, such as Los Suyates farm. The farm is currently managed by Leticia Milagros Gonzalez Morazan, who says the farm's growing altitude is between 1440 and 1700 m, and that it places great emphasis on protecting flora and fauna; besides coffee, it also grows other crops, and the coffee all grows alongside shade trees, which slows the ripening of the fruit and also sustains local and wildlife diversity.

As early as 2021, the farm began taking part in Nicaragua's COE, and in 2022 it took first place, giving it more funds to invest in the farm, while this year it also took second place at the 2024 COE.
