Indonesian coffee origins

Asia is the largest of the seven continents, and apart from Antarctica it is also the continent with the highest elevation, high in the centre and low around the edges, with an average altitude of about 950 m, mainly mountains, plateaus and hills, and home to many famous peaks and volcanoes. In addition, the Asian continent spans the frigid, temperate and torrid zones, and its climate types are complex and diverse. Coffee is mainly grown in Southeast Asia and South Asia, where the climate is mostly a humid tropical monsoon zone. Asia's climate is suitable for crop growth and its natural resources are abundant, so its agriculture is also highly developed, and it has quite a few coffee-producing countries, such as China, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Among them, Indonesia is the world's fourth-largest coffee-producing country, and such high output is thanks to the country's terrain, climate and abundant natural resources. Indonesia is made up of 17,508 islands, hence the title "Country of Ten Thousand Islands"; it is the world's largest archipelagic country, with diverse terrain, most islands being rugged mountains, hills and plains. At the same time, because it lies at the junction of the Eurasian Plate, the Indian Ocean Plate and the Pacific Plate, it experiences relatively frequent volcanic eruptions.

Indonesia lies in the tropics and mainly has a tropical rainforest and tropical monsoon climate. The climate is hot and humid all year round, with average temperatures mostly between 25-27°C, and the year is mainly divided into a dry season and a rainy season. However, because it has so many islands, its climate is diverse and complex. Its varied terrain and rich climatic features make Indonesia a major agricultural country and also an ideal coffee-growing region.

Indonesian coffee regions 1

At present, coffee is grown on several islands in Indonesia, and the coffee regions are also distinguished by island, such as Sulawesi, Bali (Bail), Java and Sumatra, all of which are common Indonesian coffee classifications today.

Among these islands, the most famous is Sumatra. It is the largest island within Indonesia and the one with the highest coffee production, and the coffee produced here is famous for the word "Mandheling". Sumatra is mainly composed of the Barisan Mountains in the west and lowland plains in the east.

The Barisan Mountains run the length of the island, and there are several volcanoes along the range. The volcanic ash brings fertile soil, and together with the abundant freshwater resources here, it allows coffee trees to grow vigorously. In the south of the island, Robusta is mainly grown, while Arabica is concentrated in the higher-altitude northern areas, with the Gayo region on Mount Gayo in the Special Region of Aceh and the Lintong region in North Sumatra Province being the most representative.

In FrontStreet Coffee's everyday-bean series, there is a coffee from Lintong on Sumatra, this well-known Indonesian region. It uses the Ateng variety (Catimor; Ateng is the local name), is processed with the wet-hulled method commonly seen locally, and is given a deep roast; once brewed it gives off herbaceous, spice and dark chocolate flavours, with a caramel-like, full-bodied mouthfeel and a high sweet aftertaste.

In addition, Java is also relatively well known, and the coffee variety Java takes its name from it. It is understood that in the early 20th century, the botanist P.J.S Carmer brought coffee varieties selected and bred in Ethiopia to Indonesia and named them the "Abyssinia" series, which included the Java variety; because of its strong disease resistance and excellent flavour, it was widely planted. Later, this variety was also introduced and grown by farmers in Africa, the Americas and other regions, and so the variety was named after the island of Java, "Java".

Java lies between Bali and Sumatra and is Indonesia's fifth-largest island, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south and the Java Sea to the north, and it is one of the most densely populated islands in the world.

In the island's low-lying areas, Robusta is mostly grown, while specialty coffee is mainly grown on higher-altitude volcanoes: in the west it is concentrated on Mount Pangrango, and the central coffee regions surround Mount Merapi. The largest and most important coffee-producing region on Java is in the east, distributed across the famous Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen, at growing altitudes of between 900-1800 m. More than 95% of Indonesia's coffee beans are produced by smallholders, and the larger coffee estates are mainly located in East Java Province and Central Java Province.
