According to local Colombian media reports, Colombian Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez announced on August 5 that military operations against the anti-government armed group the National Liberation Army (ELN) would be restarted, and that the ceasefire agreement previously observed by both sides would not be extended after it expired on August 3.

Meanwhile, according to reports from the National Liberation Army, the Colombian government violated the terms of the ceasefire agreement and was demanded to remove the group from its list of organized armed groups; otherwise, an extension of the ceasefire could not be considered.
It is understood that the National Liberation Army (ELN) was founded in 1964, currently has about 4,500 members, and is the second-largest guerrilla organization in Colombia after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia; since its founding, the organization has been in a state of war with the government military. At present, the organization is mainly active in the southwestern Colombian provinces of Choco, Cauca, Narino and Putumayo, and in the northeastern province of North Santander.

Since taking office in August 2022, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has been actively promoting peace talks between the government and the National Liberation Army (ELN), but in recent times the peace talks between the two sides have once again stalled. The armed group has also threatened that if the problem of funding for the armed group cannot be resolved, it will resume kidnappings, robberies and other actions to obtain funds.
At present, Colombia is plagued by continuous internal conflict, all because in July the Colombian Minister of Defense announced the termination of the ceasefire agreement signed with some factions of the anti-government armed group the Central General Staff. It has also ordered the military to launch a full-scale offensive against this faction of the Central General Staff. The Central General Staff is a branch of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the country's largest anti-government armed group. Therefore, the Colombian government forces are currently facing the country's two largest anti-government armed groups.

Moreover, these two major anti-government armed groups are currently mainly active in the southwestern Colombian departments of Choco, Cauca, Narino and Putumayo, and the northeastern department of Norte de Santander. In recent days, local media have also reported that multiple kidnappings and other serious incidents have occurred in rural areas of these departments.
If the government forces conduct offensive operations against the anti-government armed groups in these areas, it will seriously affect multiple industries in the region, especially agriculture, one of the country's pillar industries.Among them, the departments of Cauca, Narino and Norte de Santander are all among Colombia's important coffee-producing regions, home to many well-known coffee estates and some small coffee farmers. The civil war conflict will displace civilians and damage roads and other infrastructure in the region, ultimately affecting the coffee quality and yield of these areas.

Moreover, within this province lies the site of Colombia's main port, and coffee is also one of the main sources of foreign exchange income. These anti-government armed groups may rob coffee beans to earn foreign exchange in order to buy weapons, ultimately affecting coffee exports.
Earlier, Arabica coffee prices fell back, but in recent days, Brazil's meteorological department indicated that temperatures in some Brazilian coffee-producing regions are expected to drop to near 5℃, which will adversely affect coffee production, triggering excessive market reactions and causing coffee prices to rebound. At present, Colombia, the world's third-largest coffee-producing country, has seen reduced coffee production due to its civil war, which will further push coffee prices higher.
