According to media reports, Tropical Storm Sara recently formed in the Caribbean, becoming the 18th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm has already made landfall in northern Honduras, and affected by this storm, the President of Honduras declared a 30-day national state of emergency.

According to a report from Honduras' National Secretariat for Risk Management and Contingencies, Tropical Storm Sara has affected nearly 33,000 people to varying degrees across the country. Of these, 6,604 families have been severely affected, and some areas have lost contact with the outside world.
It is reported that Tropical Storm Sara is currently moving westward at a speed of 15-20 km per hour in Colon Department, Honduras, bringing torrential rain, floods, landslides and mudslides to the country. Rainfall in most areas has reached 300-500 mm, and in the most severely affected areas it will exceed 700 mm. Multiple roads have been submerged, making travel difficult for residents.

The most severe situation at present is in the La Esperanza mountain range in the north-central part of the country and the nearby mountainous areas, where rivers have overflowed and disasters such as flooding and mudslides have occurred. The country's armed forces have deployed personnel and logistical resources to assist the disaster victims.
It is understood that Honduras is located in the coastal region of northern Central America, and its special geographical environment causes the area to experience frequent violent storms. In June of this year, Honduras had already experienced an extraordinary rainstorm. According to a report from the National Secretariat of Risk and Emergency Management, at that time the rainstorm caused road damage and rivers to overflow; during that period, 1 person died due to the rainstorm, more than 6,000 people were affected by the severe weather, more than 900 people were forced to evacuate, and yellow alerts were issued in 7 provinces across the country.

But this time it was hit by a tropical storm, and the scope of impact was even more severe. Moreover, the storm Sara is currently moving toward the northwest, so Honduras' neighboring countries Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Mexico will all be affected to some degree.
In addition, the storm is mainly in the northwestern part of Honduras, which is where Honduras' main ports are located, including the largest and most important Puerto Cortes, so for these few days Honduras' import and export business will be suspended, which is not conducive to the development of Honduras' industries.

Honduras is the largest coffee producer in Central America and the sixth largest in the world, and a major exporter of Arabica coffee. However, Honduras's coffee production this year has not been ideal. According to data released by the Honduras Coffee Institute (IHCAFE), in August 2024 Honduras exported a total of 321,303 bags of coffee (60 kg per bag), a decrease of 19.44% compared with the same period last year. At the same time, since the 2023/24 year, Honduras has cumulatively exported 4.35 million bags of coffee, a decrease of 11.07% compared with last year.
However, according to IHCAFE's forecast, coffee production in the 2024/25 year is expected to increase, with coffee exports projected to rise 14.5% year-on-year to 5.37 million bags. But recent heavy rainfall may have an impact on this. November marks the start of Honduras's harvest season, but the arrival of heavy rain will delay the coffee harvest, and the heavy rain may knock down ripe fruit, affecting the final yield.

In addition, roads being destroyed and port exports being blocked will both affect the export of coffee and other products, affecting coffee supply. Therefore, recently, because multiple coffee-producing regions in Brazil, Colombia and Central America have all been affected by severe weather, with both production and exports declining, this has intensified the surge in Arabica coffee futures prices to a historic high.
