Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture released a report on the coffee industry in Vietnam, an Asian country. According to the report, Vietnam’s coffee production in 2024/25 is estimated at 29 million bags (60 kg per bag), slightly less than the earlier projection of 29.1 million bags, as rising coffee prices have encouraged farmers to invest more capital in production.
However, Vietnam’s coffee cultivation area will remain stable at around 600,000 hectares for the foreseeable future. This is because farmers in the Central Highlands region are starting to diversify their crops, shifting away from coffee to higher-income alternatives such as durian and passion fruit—currently, the income from growing durian is twice that of coffee.
Nevertheless, the currently high coffee prices are helping to stabilize some coffee-growing regions. In provinces such as Đắk Lắk and Lâm Đồng in the Central Highlands, coffee remains an important crop.
According to trade statistics and high coffee prices, Vietnam's coffee export volume for the 2023/24 fiscal year is estimated at 26.85 million bags. However, domestic coffee prices in Vietnam also remain high, with current local purchase prices at 118–123 million Vietnamese dong per ton. As a result, some traders may face potential difficulties in purchasing coffee.
Due to the negative impact of high temperatures and drought on coffee production in 2023/24, such weather conditions are expected to become more frequent over time.
To address this, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI) have developed strategies to maintain and improve sustainable coffee production, such as replacing old coffee trees with new varieties, encouraging intercropping to increase shade and water retention, adopting water-saving irrigation systems, and helping coffee farmers certify their land.

Although the USDA believes Vietnam’s production could reach 29 million bags, the market generally remains skeptical about this figure. After all, earlier, international trader Volcafe predicted that Vietnam’s 2024/25 Robusta production would be 24 million bags—the lowest level in nearly 13 years.
