South America is a diverse continent with abundant natural resources, and thus has many coffee-producing countries, such as Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, and others.

Bolivia

The Plurinational State of Bolivia is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Paraguay. It has a land area of 1.098 million square kilometers and is rich in natural resources.

The flag of Bolivia is rectangular, with the flag surface divided into three equal horizontal rectangles from top to bottom: red, yellow, and green. In the past, red symbolized sacrifice for the country, yellow symbolized hope, and green symbolized the sacred land. Nowadays, they represent Bolivia’s animals, minerals, and plants, respectively.

The national flag of Bolivia used on formal occasions features the country’s coat of arms in the center. The central part of the coat of arms is an oval, within which there are depictions of the sun, mountains, breadfruit trees, llamas, and grains. The upper half of the oval’s border is inscribed with the word “Bolivia” in Spanish, and the lower half contains ten five-pointed stars representing the nine departments of Bolivia and the coastal province taken by Chile. On each side of the oval are three national flags, behind which are crossed fasces and weapons symbolizing authority. At the top is a condor, symbolizing strength and freedom, and on both sides are laurel and olive branches, representing the people’s pride in national freedom and the desire for harmonious coexistence among nations.

Most of eastern and northeastern Bolivia consists of Amazon River alluvial plains, accounting for 60% of the country's area. The central part is a valley region located at the eastern foothills of the Andes, which is agriculturally developed, with many important cities concentrated here. The western part is the Bolivian highlands, with an average elevation of over 1,000 meters.

Yungas: A rugged agricultural region located on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains. It is the oldest coffee-growing region in Bolivia. The capital city, La Paz, lies to the west of Yungas. Coffee is grown here at elevations between 800 and 2,500 meters, with the harvest season running from July to November each year. Coffees from this region typically exhibit deep, rich sweetness, soft citrus acidity, and layers of black fruit and berry flavors.

Copacabana: Located in the western part of the country, near Lake Titicaca. The humid air in this region provides excellent conditions for coffee cultivation. Lake Titicaca is also one of the highest-altitude lakes in the world, with an average annual surface temperature of around 10–14°C, which means the coffee from this region already benefits from both high altitude and cool temperatures.

La Paz Caranavi: Located north of Yungas, this region is also situated in the hilly areas of the Andes, but does not reach the same high altitudes as Yungas. The average elevation in Caranavi is 1,500 meters, so the coffee produced here tends to have slightly less complexity and more chocolatey flavors.

Coffee Varieties

Bolivia mainly grows Typica, Caturra, and a special coffee variety—the Java variety.

Java: This variety was introduced to the island of Java in Indonesia from Ethiopia in the early 19th century. It was initially thought to be the Typica variety, and was later brought to Cameroon, where it was found to have resistance to coffee berry disease. It was then introduced to Central and South American countries. Java has very long fruits and seeds, with yellowish-bronze shoots, and the plants are quite tall but with low yield. Due to its outstanding flavor—comparable to that of Geisha—as well as stronger resistance to leaf rust and coffee berry disease, it is well suited for smallholder farmers.
